![]() Most of the rest of the crew have worked under Ian and are ‘feeling a little awkward’ with this new situation. ![]() Ian Yerxa was the previous captain of the ship, so there's a bit of tension around the leadership now that Niko's been put in charge. The Salvare crew was feeling awkward when Niko was placed in charge instead of Ian. William, the holographic computer (AI), informs Niko of all this. She's been awoken because the Salvare hasn't yet reached Pi Canis Majoris.Īpparently, the scientists on Earth got the incorrect coordinates for the system – it will now take around seven more months to get there. A month into the journey and Niko is awoken from Soma sleep. I would very much like links to videos that illustrate the “more stan than Hilary” tier of Swifties, pls.The mission was supposed to take six months – three months to Pi Canis Majoris and three months back. Any of my true Swiftie stans are to my level, if not more!” Taylor does so many only fan-understood things during the shows-it’s just so fun to be a part of,” she said of the surprise song hype, before adding, “Non-Swiftie friends definitely think I’m silly, but all my Swiftie friends are supportive. “Surprise songs are just such fun moments-where the entire fandom on social media is all online freaking out together. Hilary told that she’s *pretty sure* the bride and groom didn’t notice her “Dear John” freakout, but it’s hard to imagine they’d be too surprised if they had because Hilary wears her Taylor fandom proudly for all to see-like, the fact that she’s already seen the Eras Tour five times (“and actually all face-value tickets-I refuse to pay resale prices,” which is a feat worth flexing about in and of itself, considering what a debacle the Eras Tour ticket sale process was). There’s every look on Hilary’s face (no one has ever been as excited about anything I’ve done in my life as she is about a song playing at a concert she isn’t even at). There’s every look on her friend’s face (which cycles from concern to surprise to shared joy at an impressive rate). There’s the urgency with which she shares the news, like a Taylor Swift–themed Paul Revere or medieval town crier announcing that the prince is having a ball (or whatever real town criers would have announced). There’s Hilary’s entrance, which is best described as “if the stampede from the 1995 Jumanji were reenacted by one very excited person.” There’s the fact that “Shake It Off” is playing at the reception, meaning she’s interrupting Swift with more Swift. And as proof that Hilary had no qualms about that life choice even upon reflection, she personally uploaded the video to TikTok.Įverything about the moment/video is perfection. Thankfully, because she was at an actual, in-full-swing wedding reception, someone ( thanks, Hilary’s friend Crystal!) happened to be in the middle of filming a video at the moment when Hilary barreled out of the bathroom she was hiding in while attempting to livestream the surprise songs Taylor was playing halfway across the country (Hilary and the wedding reception were in Southern California, and Taylor was performing in Minneapolis at the time) to let everyone know that “Dear John” was being performed live onstage at that very minute. Well, that and the fact that she is the kind of human who follows her instincts full speed when, for example, she learns that Taylor Swift is playing “Dear John” several states away from her and she needs to react to that information, and if she happens to be at a friend’s wedding reception when that gloriously frantic reaction happens, so be it. ![]() That woman is Hilary Stein, and the main thing you need to know about her is that she is ICONIC and deserves so many more TikTok followers than she currently has. This plan was the best way for the trilateral group to ensure Australia didn’t suffer a capability gap while the countries grew their submarine industrial bases. The advantages of nuclear propulsion systems will transform Australia’s undersea capabilities, allowing the submarines to stay at sea for months at a time, and give them virtually unlimited range without having to pull into port to refuel. The subs will replace the diesel-powered Collins-class submarines currently in Australia’s fleet. Australia will do the same for its navy in the early 2040s based on the same new design. Britain will design and deliver to its own forces a new nuclear-powered submarine named SSN AUKUS, which will feature Virginia-class technologies from the U.S. Phase 3, beginning late in the next decade, is the heart of the agreement. “We’ve developed a phased approach that’s going to make sure Australian sailors are fully trained and prepared to safely operate this fleet so they can deliver this critical capacity on the fastest possible timetable,” Biden said. and Australian funding and infrastructure improvements for American shipyards come through. That’ll take place in the 2030s if both U.S. with the option to buy two more if needed. Once enough Australians have been trained and the country has enough infrastructure to house many subs, then it’s on to Phase 2, where Canberra will buy three Virginia-class nuclear-powered submarines from the U.S. Starting as early as 2027, the three countries will participate in a rotational submarine force aptly named Submarine Rotational Forces West. already use nuclear propulsion in their submarines, but Australia does not. The boat was saved from the scrapyard, however, and was designated a National Historic Landmark and converted into a museum ship, and towed back to Groton, Connecticut.Biden outlined steps in the “Optimal Pathway,” beginning with Phase 1, which involves American and British submarines visiting ports in Australia and embedding those sailors into U.S. In the spring of 1979, the boat set out for a final voyage to Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Vallejo, California, and was decommissioned the following year. In a career lasting twenty-five years, Nautilus traveled almost 500,000 miles and took part in a variety of developmental testing programs, while continuing to serve alongside many more modern nuclear-powered submarines. Anderson, made the announcement to the crew, “for the world, our country, and the Navy – the North Pole.” On August 3, 1958, the boat’s second Commanding Officer, Commander William R. In July 1958, SSN-571 departed Pearl Harbor, Hawaii under top-secret orders to conduct “Operation Sunshine,” the first crossing of the North Pole by any naval vessel. In short order, the USS Nautilus shattered many submerged speed and distance records. The boat could remain submerged for almost unlimited periods and could travel far greater distances than any diesel-electric submarine of the era, while its uranium-powered nuclear reactor allowed the submarine to travel underwater at speeds in excess of 20 knots. In drills, Nautilus was able to successfully attack surface ships without being detected and was able to just as successfully evade most pursuers. In 1947, Rickover was put in charge of the Navy’s nuclear propulsion program and set out to develop the first atomic submarine – delivering Nautilus ahead of schedule.ĭuring the boat’s sea trials, under the command of Captain Eugene Parks “Dennis” Wilkinson, Nautilus established the capabilities and early tactics of a nuclear-powered submarine. Getty The Packers have drafted a new quarterback to compete with Jordan Love in 2023. Not being counted on to carry an entire offense through the season, at this stage of his career, is likely best for Wentz. It is a role that he could thrive in, as he has played well in spurts the last two seasons between the Colts and Commanders. The consistent reminders that you’re indeed using a beta OS on a beta virtual machine were mostly graphics-related. Yes, I ran Geekbench, which really tells you only that the M1 has very fast CPU cores. Which is an absolutely golden opportunity for… Personally, I’m pessimistic about Boot Camp, but mildly hopeful that at some point, Apple’s strategy of advanced virtual machine support, and Microsoft taking advantage of the secret sauce will deliver more than acceptable Windows 10 performance on M1 Macs. The wildest idea I had through all of this was Apple all of a sudden deciding the gig is up and selling some of their design secrets to the competition. Apple ARM to Windows ARM is a heck of a lot easier than x86 to ARM. There’s also a side-door for Windows 10 for ARM that Apple’s switch to the architecture has opened, potentially rendering the entire issue moot: more vendors porting their apps to ARM. Personally, because of the security mission I mentioned, I’m not sanguine about that possibility. ![]() Who knows, Apple might decide it’s not such a bad thing to let Windows run natively on their hardware again. Even if the method isn’t 100 percent the same (as is likely), it’s bound to take the same approach, which renders optimizing for Apple’s special sauce a mere bagatelle. If other ARM chips that handle x86/圆4 as well as the M1 show up, then Microsoft would have to suffer a true bout of idiocy not to optimize for it. What the patent situation is, I don’t know, but clever reverse engineering is another plentiful Silicon Valley skill. The legal battles might be protracted and vicious, but the bottom line is that Apple’s M1 magic might not be secret or proprietary for nearly as long as the company would’ve liked. If Apple isn’t just a tiny bit upset over this development, dye my hair red and call me Harpo. The real stunner is Qualcomm, a huge supplier of ARM-based chips, entering into an agreement to purchase fledgling Nuvia. There’s a lawsuit in progress over this.īut wait, there’s more. The Days of Our Lives, Silicon Valley style Even Microsoft has supported ARM for quite a while, first with Windows RT (8.1/32-bit ARM), and now with Windows 10 for ARM. It’s in nearly every mobile phone, most portable devices, TVs, and more, though under licenses that allow the vendors to call their ARM implementation anything they want. This is partly due to the Rosetta 2 install time translation (or requested), but Apple doused the M1 with some of what I call “special sauce”-sly tricks that include support for x86 memory ordering, one of the main differences between Intel and ARM architectures.ĪRM is hardly new. Unfortunately, there isn’t a whole lot of room for adjustment – the process is almost entirely automatic – so if you do end up with a disappointing result, you may want to start the noise reduction process over and use the manual method instead. Denoise isn’t perfect, and there are times when it’ll do a bad job.In general, I recommend trying Denoise on every noisy image, but there are a couple of caveats to bear in mind: This begs the question: Is there even a reason to do manual noise reduction anymore? Or is Adobe’s AI-powered Denoise the way forward? Denoise uses powerful AI technology to remove noise without significantly affecting detail, and it does a very nice job. You would work in the Detail panel and carefully adjust the Luminance and Color sliders until you achieved a nice result.Īnd while you can still use that method – now referred to as manual noise reduction – the updated Lightroom boasts another much more effective noise reduction tool, known as Denoise. Prior to the April 2023 update, Lightroom Classic offered one main method for reducing noise. AI-powered Denoise vs manual noise reduction in Lightroom Luminance noise can give you a more filmic effect, which can be used artistically, but reducing luminance noise is more likely to cause unpleasant smoothing effects. In general, color noise is considered more unsightly but is easier to remove effectively. ![]() In the crop below, you can see many flecks of color, yet the area is supposed to be a solid blue: There are two types of noise in photos: color noise and luminance noise.Ĭolor noise appears as multicolored pixels. On the other hand, for most photographers – including many professionals – the older manual noise reduction tools offered in Lightroom are generally sufficient, and the new Denoise tool is simply icing on the cake. If you have the time, do a direct comparison with Adobe’s AI-powered Denoise tool and see what you like best. However, it’s not perfect, and it cannot magically turn a noise-dominated image into a completely clean, sharp file.īecause of this, if you are a purist and noise reduction is an ongoing and significant need, then I’d recommend considering a dedicated noise-reduction program such as DeNoise AI, Neat Image, or Photo Ninja. This is because the noise removal process smooths out noisy areas, which gets rid of unwanted artifacts but also obliterates fine detail.įortunately, Adobe has been hard at work updating Lightroom’s noise-reduction tools, and thanks to the recent (mid-2023) addition of AI-powered Denoise, the program is better than ever at removing noise while retaining key image detail. ![]() Noise reduction is great, and it can easily improve your images.Īt the same time, it’s important to note that noise removal is generally achieved at the expense of image detail. |
